The Science of Hair Color: Permanent vs Semi vs Demi — Decoded

Every hair dye bottle is essentially a chemistry experiment. The difference between a color that lasts 6 weeks and one that fades in 10 days comes down to one thing: how deeply the dye molecule penetrates your hair shaft. Here's the science, simplified.

Three layers of the hair shaft

Your hair has an outer layer (cuticle — overlapping scales), a middle layer (cortex — where pigment lives), and a core (medulla). Dyes work by getting past the cuticle into the cortex, where they either deposit color or change your natural pigment.

Semi-permanent (lasts 6–8 washes)

Dye molecules sit on top of the cuticle and partially soak in, but they don't open it. No developer, no ammonia. Great for: enhancing your natural tone, trying a shade, or refreshing between appointments. Zero damage.

Demi-permanent (lasts 12–24 washes)

Uses a low-volume developer (usually 5–10 volume) that slightly lifts the cuticle so dye penetrates into the outer cortex. Can darken or tone, but cannot lighten. Blends grays beautifully. Minimal damage.

Permanent (lasts until it grows out or is cut off)

Uses ammonia (or an alternative) to fully open the cuticle and peroxide to lift your natural pigment, then deposits new color molecules inside the cortex. This is the only type that can lighten hair significantly. It's also the most damaging — every permanent color slightly weakens the cuticle.

Why your color fades (and how to stop it)

Color fades because of: hot water (opens the cuticle and washes dye out), sun UV (oxidizes pigment), sulfates (strip color), and hard water (mineral buildup alters tone). Use cool water, color-safe sulfate-free shampoo, a weekly color-depositing conditioner, and a shower filter if your water is hard. Done — your color lasts twice as long.
